Thoughts after WWDC 2024 keynote

I thought WWDC was pretty solid – some very nice “spit-n-polish” types of features added across all devices, some very early “we-don’t-know-where-this-will-go-but-here-it-is-anyway” updates to VisionOS, and a very admirable approach toward AI integration. I especially like that AI and all the other features are being made accessible to developers through APIs.

I was somewhat disappointed not to see Shortcuts or Home/Homekit dovetail into those updates. Perhaps the other WWDC presentations this week will show us what’s new for those. Shortcuts needs a massive streamlining. There’s still too much friction there.

I’d love to see Shortcuts benefit from the AI integration – “Computer, build me a shortcut that will accept a file from Finder, run it through preprocessor A if it contains this text or preprocessor B if it contains this text, print it to PDF, make a thumbnail image, and upload both things to the FTP server. Make the shortcut accessible through the Quick Actions menu, or make it available using this key-combo.”
