I have 2 home screen shortcuts that are just a “Choose from Menu” which then runs an app (in one case) or runs a Drafts action (in the other). I also have a Shortcuts widget in my Today view that runs a handful of shortcuts. All of these suffer from the problem that sometimes they don’t work–in the case of the home screen shortcuts, I see the icon appear in the Dynamic Island and then…nothing. The cure is to open the Shortcuts app and then kill it. Then it works for a while. This has been the case for a while now…going back at least one phone and iOS version (currently iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 18).
Anyone else seeing this? Anyone have an idea what’s going on and/or a fix?
Thanks!
Dan
When it happens, can you try running them from the Shortcuts app? My guess is that any shortcut with user interaction (choose from menu, quick look, show result, etc) wouldn’t work.
I had a similar experience before. I’m not 100% sure but it was caused by a shortcut on Quick Look or Show Result that failed to display a large amount of data. After that happened, user interaction actions stopped working.

So I started trying directly from Shortcuts any time it failed from the home screen icon and…mixed results, sometimes it works, sometimes not. When not, killing the Shortcuts app works to reset, as before.
I don’t think I’m regularly running any Shortcuts that would try to display a lot of data–these two home screen icons are 99% of my Shortcuts usage.
I’m kind of on the fence as to whether I should ever bother trying from Shortcuts again–giving that it might fail anyway, it seems like it’s more efficient to just kill the Shortcuts app on the first failure, given that I know that will make it work.
Thanks for your input on this, hopefully it’s the foundation of the information that will someday lead to a real fix!
