Extreme Noob Question re HomeKit & apps

HomeKit question

Example:
I have a Kwikset door lock on my kitchen door. If the Home app sees my door lock (I.e. I can unlock my door in the Home app). Do I still need to the have the Kwikset app installed on my phone?

I guess my question is can I uninstall the Kwikset (or any of the device apps) app only use the Home app to work my locks, lights, etc?

For most of my HomeKit compatible IoT devices I still need their App for firmware updates.

And some devices have additional functionality that is not available in HomeKit.
