Encrypt Text as Output from Shortcuts?

Does anyone know of a way to encrypt text as an output from a Shortcut? Would like to use Shortcuts as an easier way to do Mac inventory and would like to store the computer’s admin password in this way, but encrypted so only certain staff have access

I’m not really clear on what you want to do, but no, Shortcuts doesn’t have a built in encryption function.

You can use the keychain via Scriptable, to store encrypted data. Since I’m not 100% sure what you actually want to do, I don’t know if that useful to you.

Thanks I’m trying to find a way to encrypt text as an output - where it would need some key to gain access to it - I think I found a workaround by just linking to a URL in TeamPassword our password manager at work and that URL would need a proper account/password for access.

I think some sort of secure centralised password management system is absolutely the way to go for IT administration.

But in terms of the academic sense of the question on encrypting text, here’s one way it could be done.

Important

Cryptography is something that can be difficult to do properly. Whilst I know enough to get by in my work I’m far from an expert. The example here is based on a crypto library that I would describe as ‘a little old’ (but I had a copy lying around) and I don’t know how secure it is still considered to be, but I suspect for many cases it may suffice, and for anyone who needs an assurance it whould be straightforward to find a more up to date library and choose the desired crypto-algorithm to use.

Combining Apps

Shortcuts is an amazing app, but it is not an app that’s really designed to allow sophistictaed mathematical operations to be carried out quickly and easily. Certainly most traditional programming languages are more suited to this kind of thing.

To that end this approach uses a secondary app for Shortcuts to hand off to in order to do the encryption/decryption. I’m using Scriptable which supports JavaScript, but other apps such as Pythonista could be used too.

This should be copied into a Scriptable script called “Crypto”.

Along with the library it has some code that reads the URL scheme parameters it is passed. It uses these to determine whether to encrypt or decrpyt. It also receives the text to encrypt and the encryption key in the same manner.

The resulting text is then returned using x-callback.

Shortcuts

The following shortcut takes some text and passes it across to the Scriptable Crypto script for encrypting. It receives the encrypted text, displays the details and then repeats the process to decrypt the encrypted text.

Conclusion

Once again, if you want crypto that’s absolutely sound, it is worth putting in the time to research the currently available libraries anddo use a library rather than trying to create your own algorithms from scratch (unless you’re a world class cryptographer of course - in which case you probably wouldn’ be reading this ).

For storing and sharing Mac passwords fo admin purposes, I don’t think this is a good approach. A maintained password management system I think would give me a lot more peace of mind for such a scenario.

Well, to be fair both Scriptable and Shortcuts have undergone some notable changes in the past year. I’m guessing that you didn’t dig into it.

The whole thing can be simplified using the shortcuts parameterisation approach that Simon included with the i*OS13 versions of Scriptable.

… then it works. Or for me, it works as much as is expected with this. I do get occasional crashes and switching the Scriptable script to always run in app doesn’t seem to help; I suspect the stability is actually on the Shortcuts side right now.

Anyway, that should set you on a more up to date path, but realistically crypto stuff is probably better handled in specific apps. Perhaps at some point a Shortcuts assistant app with appropriate crypto-library access will avail itself and make this sort of thing more reliable. but if it is for personal use then password manager apps or even keychain might be a better option. For messaging, you have things like Threema.
